Well, it was a great night at Beaulieu - standing gigs just have the best atmosphere, people singing and dancing together is good for the soul! I was at Bournemouth in April and people just sat and listened, they didn't even sing WYWH or Comfy! But tonight showed that southerners can have a good time and sing a bit too! (mind you, there were a few there from 'up north' that had made a raiding party south  )

BEAULIEU POPS 06 - Sunday 2nd July

Set 1

SOYCD 1-5
Learning to Fly
Time
The Great Gig in the Sky
Us & Them
Pigs

~ BREAK ~

Set 2

Echoes
High Hopes
Hey You
Sheep
One of These Days
Happiest Days
ABITW Pt II
Comfortably Numb

Encore

Run Like Hell.

The weather was great, the location was great and it was good to meet some of the regulars from the forum.

Just a small bit about the show, WYWH was still missing, but I don't think anyone cared a hoot, as they were having such a good time! We also had no Skippy on stage during One of These Days, as there was no room for him, with the glitter ball there.

The Great Gig in The Sky was truly awesome, thanks Ola for another great memory to cherish. The crowd really loved this too and boy what a winning smile you gave us in return for the applause - many, many thanks.

Echoes was great and it seemed the perfect setting for this piece, with the music wailing loudly and the sun setting behind the stage. Comfortably Numb was spine tinglingly good as always and no matter how many times I hear it, I never get tired of it! In the last 6 weeks I have heard CN performed live 7 times, 3 times by Gilmour, once with Dave Kilminster and Roger Waters and the other times by bands who play Floyd's music (I don't like the term 'Tribute band' as Aussie Floyd are a band in their own right). Of all these performances, I have to say tonight?s was way up there and that includes DG at the RAH!

Another winner of a show, with some new fans too - I overheard some comments from people behind me, who had never seen Aussie Floyd before and they were totally astounded. Welcome to the fold and I am sure they will be back.

Thanks to all the guys in the band, the ladies and the road crew - it was nice to meet a few of you after the show as well.

~ Great Gig ~

There Goes My Hero Watching Over Me

Back at work already, completely knackered having got to bed at 3 this morning after the Beaulieu show. Got loads to do, so this will be brief. I've included my thoughts here about Rog on Saturday as well, because I think it is interesting to compare them.

You can?t deny that Rog is the consummate showman. You could have had him backed by a couple of washboards and a kazoo, and he would have put on a great show. His huge presence on stage, coupled with the emotional attachment of seeing a guy that you?ve been following for 40 years does create an excitement that is hard to match. The music, on the other hand, just wasn?t ?in the Floyd zone?. For most of the show they sounded like a Floyd tribute that hadn?t worked out the magic formula for creating that unique Floyd feeeeeeeel. Nick Mason coming on the second set went a long way to fixing that, but it still wasn?t right. The only time for me that they really hit their stride and showed what they could do was on Perfect Sense ? now, that was really special, up there with the best pieces of live performance I have ever seen. He seems to have more respect for his solo material than the Floyd back catalogue. And his political polemic that pervaded the entire proceedings really started to irritate me, but that?s another matter.

Last night at Beaulieu was entirely different. Sure there was no Rog, but I saw the Aussies lay claim to the title of official custodians of Floyd?s legacy with devastating effect. They were magnificent. The set list was a two part ?best of? that included Echoes and quite a lot of variation on other recent shows. No Skippy, I think he?s followed the current trend and checked himself into rehab. This band works its collective arse off at mastering exactly what Floyd music is all about and packing it into a show that gets better and better, with a musical feel and skill that for me completely eclipsed Rog's show. They nailed it with the opening bars of Shine On and didn?t let up. I?m going to be buzzing for at least a week. Rog must have been smoking crack the day he picked Dave Kilminster in preference to Damian, because as has already been observed in another post, last night's Comfy was the best ever, anywhere, any time, any place. And Ola, my phone number is ..... (switch to pm).

It was also great to meet loads of forum members, some for the first time. You are all lovely people and it?s a pleasure to be a part of this thriving community.

Nick

I know you all laughed at me last night when I said that Aussie Floyd sound absolutely fantastic doing an outdoor gig.
Now that perhaps you have though about my apparent crass remark you will understand what I mean.
This band have such an expansive sound with all those touches of detailed genius that it just have to break free from the bounds of ceilings and acoustic reflection for it to work the magic of its full effect.
Did it work last night?   bloody hell and some!!
Echoes  was just outstanding. Not even the smallest detail of criticsism could be leveled.
A new slant on proceedings for me was the fact that the first hour of the show took place in daylight.
I could see the band at work, its a big part of the show usually masked by darkness, to for the first time be able to see the level of skill and dedication applied gave the music the extra edge. I may also add what a pleasure it was to see Bonney commit to his task?? We all are aware of the critical importance of his percussion being the driving force of any given piece of music. It made a change ,even though he was still largely hiding behind his kit,to see Paul work so skillfully and hard
The two post above give a far better account of the atmosphere and
overall joy of the evening.
So Ill just say," yes I agree-well said."
I recommend that any and all Aussie Floyd followers take the opportunity to attend an outdoor gig whenever the chance presents itself.
I'll see you in front of the stage at Beaulieu next year then ?
On a personal note ,I met some very nice people last night which for my part just added to the overall enjoyment of a great weekend.
It was nice to put faces to the names that I regularly allow to insult me  ;D
great to meet you all. I know you were on your best behavior yesterday.
