Arrived about 8pm at which point the beginning of Shine on's intro left no question of what was to come.
It was miserable weather here in Detroit last night (about 45 Degrees Fahrenheit and raining), but that didn't stop about 1000-1500 from showing.
We walked right up to the stage and Mr. Screen Tribute was looming high above. As expected, the lights were mind boggling in their complexity and sheer quantity. I copied the setlist from another post relating to Detroit's show so I hope it is correct. I did not write down the setlist and have terrible memory, but here goes!
Set 1
Shine On I-V
Not much to say here, the boys have probably done it so much that it's automatic.
Jamie played all the lead for this. According to Ian he's basically taking over all of Steve mac's bits.
What do you want from me
Very nice to hear this one. Ian did a great job covering Dave's vocals though I prefer him doing Roger (and that is very, very eerily similar)
You can tell when you watch him sing how hard he is concentrating on becoming Roger Waters! ;D
Time
Another standard performance - can be done in their sleep I'm sure
On The Turning Away
Very nice. Again, Ian pulled off a good Gilmour vocal (I'm pretty sure it was Ian)
Sheep
This was spectacular and really got me going. Ian was Roger Waters with a vengeance!
Damian did the Lord's prayer Vocoder bit live which was really cool. I guess they're buying some new goodies (or did they always do this)?
Not Now John
Another awesome jam. Ian pulling off more great vocal work and the girls getting into the dirty words coming out of their mouths!
>
Brain Damage/Eclipse
I've heard this so much (being in a Floyd tribute myself) that the video was the more interesting part for me.
Lots of footage of Saddam, Bushies, Reagan, Clinton, Maggie, blah, blah
Set 2
Astronomy Domine
A nice little bit for Syd! As the Surrogate Band plays this in the style of the Ummagumma version (and having tried to do the Piper version but preferring the Ummagumma version), I have to say I wanted them to rock this out harder. Fairly unexperimental as far as I remember.
Set The Controls for the Heart of the Sun
Done in the style of Roger's latest tour (not my personal preference).
This song allowed Jamie to strut his stuff on guitar (he's much more Vai-ish than I prefer, but certainly talented)
Take It Back
Very good vocal performace from all on this one, though I honestly don't care too much for hearing the Division Bell material.
Great Gig In The Sky
Apologize for not having her name down, but it was an exceptional vocal from the young lady performing this (apparently she's from Poland).
They didn't split this among the three girls, but that was okay. She had no problems staying in tune or hitting the notes. This is a very challenging vocal to perform!
Money
Pretty standard - not much to comment on here
Us and Them
Pretty standard - not much to comment on here
Nobody Home
With chair and lamp
Ian's acting is stellar - I could've sworn it was Bob Geldoff!

A nice surprise and very well received by the crowd (people were begging for Wall material)
Pigs
Very good. Damian had another mic stand with the talk box connection, but it was in the dark until the talk box solo. I heard some guy next to me comment on how "...he doesn't have the tube thingy!?". I bet he was really glad to see it though. Guess it goes to show the professionalism and thought the Aussies put into surprising their audience? Having used a talk box I'm not sure there was a technical reason to have it on another stand in the dark other than surprise factor.
Gunner's Dream
Ian blew me away on this. He has no problem hitting th highest Roger vocal lines and I sincerely could feel the effort in his throat when he sang "hold on to the dream!!". That line alone was probably as well received as Great Gig.
Wish You Were Here
Come on Damian. Splurge on a real 12 string...the pedal making your strat sound like a 12 string is so 1986!

Of course this is the sing-along song (and the guy behind me could not sing!!!) Excellent performance by Damian singing along in falsetto to the lead lines.
One Of These Days
Very nice including excellent slide work from Damian. No Kangaroo as The State Theatre is too small.
Happiest Days/Another Brick In The Wall Part 2
Extended jams from everyone ala ITAOT
Comfortably Numb
Very good and a great set ender. Damian ripped it up on the outro solo and the mirror ball coming down in front of Mr. Screen Tribute with all the intels on it was magical. A great end.
Encore
Hey You
Very nice work from everyone. Ian and I had a laugh afterwards about the close call on the vocals!
Run Like Hell
Great extended teasing from Damian on delayed guitar before the song actually started. The lasers were in full assualt on this and I think they had more lasers than last year??
Regardless, this was on par with the light show Gilmour was taking around this past Spring as far as I can remember (again my memory is poor).
All in all it was a fantastic show and certainly worth $25 (General Admission - standing).
I personally would not pay more than that though (and I can always listed to The Surrogate Band for free - Ha!).
I was thinking to myself that these guys still look really uncomfortable or shy up there though - Damian looks so innocent when he makes eye contact with some dumb loud drunk and then quickly looks away. ;D
Not a lot of smiles or interaction with each other (hardly any). Maybe that's the presentation they want to project, I don't know.
There have been many comments on their frigidity, though the girls did wear some Motorcity type t-shirts for one song (that may be as nutty as the Aussies get). I was glad to not see the inflatable Kangaroo, sorry but the Aussie selling point is not really interesting to me.
Pretty much all the interaction with the crowd was limited to the keyboardist who joked at setbreak about getting a Fosters and a vegemite sandwich.
:
Again, just a little too much of the Aussie thing (Yo - Ian's from New York!).
After the show my friend Dan and I went backstage following the drummer (eerie similarity to Zack Starkey!?) along with about another 6 people. We were part of a guest party I gather.
I introduced myself to Ian in the basement kitchen where they were all eating pizza or something (Ian and Cevor were pretty much instrumental in us even getting in) and we talked for probably about 2 hours about the tribute band world, touring, England, music, the old days of early Floyd tributes, etc.
It was a real nice time with Ian and he's a genuine man. I hope the best of success to him in all he does.
We did not meet the rest of the Aussies and I was not pushing to interrupt their dinner for my sake. Those other people that we went backstage with I think just stood around for an hour before anyone talked to them. That was weird.
Right before leaving, I did go and introduce myself to Clive Brooks (Mason's drum tech and the Aussies).
Having just read
Comfortably Numb - A History of The Wall, and recalling that Clive sat in for Willie Wilson during The Wall tour (i.e. 6/13/1981), Ian pointed him out as a pseudo celebrity at which point I remembered the story in the book.
Okay, that's about it.
Thanks again to Ian and Cevor for letting me be a part of The Aussie's return to Detroit.
