The Australian Pink Floyd Show
De Vereeniging, Nijmegen, The Netherlands
February 13th 2008
So, there it is. My first TAPFS gig! I’ve been a Floyd-fan for a couple of years so I never had the opportunity to see the real ones live. I was quite excited when TAPFS announced their European “Best Of The Wall” tour. So I immediately bought tickets for the show.
Alright, the gig! I haven’t been to the Vereeniging venue before, but it’s a nice small concert hall with great acoustics I must say. It wasn’t a sellout, there were places left on the balcony. We had seats in the back of the hall on an elevated platform, so we had a great view on the stage.
At exactly 8:00 PM the light went down and a familiar piece of music came on: the melody of ‘Outside The Wall’. The guys and girls came up in the dark and were grabbing their gear. I knew (through this forum) they would start with In The Flesh? so I held on tight! And yep there it was! What a sound! And so loud! And crystal clear! Awesome! And that was my feeling during the whole concert.
I’m not going to review every song just a couple of highlights.
There was a great rendition (like Roger Waters is playing on his DSOTM Tour) of Set The Controls.. with a magnificent soprano saxophone (I guess that was the one, I looked it up and this was the most likely) solo and I had a good laugh about Mike Kidson’s hat (the one with the ropes in front of it, how do you call such thing?).
After Mother came Sheep, one of my favourite songs. I just like the atmosphere of the song and the rocking solo at the end. In my opinion, it didn’t rock completely. Colin Wilson’s voice isn’t capable of singing this with the same power as Roger Waters did. I like Colin’s voice on the other songs, sometimes it’s a bit fragile but with Sheep it just didn’t match. But still, it’s a great song!
Then Steve Mac announced the intermission: “Go and grab a beer or have a ride on your bicycle!”
In the end of the second set the golden oldies: One Of These Days, Wish You Were Here and Comfortably Numb. Just before the last song Jason introduced the band, no Bruces and Sheilas but their real names. Comfortably Numb gave me goosebumbs, it was amazing.
So the band left the stage and the crowd started roaring, clapping and stamping. Off course the band came back and obviously for Run Like Hell. Great performance of that one. I love the pauses in the beginning of the song.
All in all, a great evening, superb sound and a great atmosphere. Thank you TAPFS!
