TOPIC: Ipswich Regent - 1st May 2008

Ipswich Regent - 1st May 2008 4 years ago #1

Four of us went to this gig, me & my other half and a couple of mates, one at his 2nd TAPFS gig (Ipswich last year his first) and another friend (a private jet pilot for the Williams F1 team) who had not seen the band for 7 years!

Time for a quick beer in the foyer bar first, where sales of the T-shirts and both DVD's were brisk. Into the packed theatre and as always at the Regent, amazed the crew can pack everything onto such a tiny stage. But alas no room for skippy or any pigs...we had lamb instead anyway.

Giggles from some in the audience as the lights were down and 'Outside the Wall' morphs into 'Waltzing Matilda' then...bang! 'In the Flesh' crashes in and I knew within 5 seconds this was going to be one of the best and one hell of a night. The sound was absolutely perfect, every instument and vocal crystal clear, Gareth really had it sorted last night.

The setlist was as the tour so far, everything seemed to be perfect, Ian sang his usual '1000 channels' and I must say I thought the girls were particularly brilliant and seemed to be really enjoying themselves..especially Ola with her moves during Young Lust. Of course the applause after TGGITS was as immense as ever, both girls were fantastic.

In the row directly infront of us were some - shall we say - very mature members of the audience! Even older than Fossil I'd say...    The two ladies were open mouthed the whole time and constantly nudging each other to look up at the lasers, quite obvious they had never seen anything like it. Always great to see the reaction of people who have never been before.

Before CN, Jason did the usual Bruces & Sheila's band introductions then Steve Mac introduced Jason saying '...On Keyboards and 4X and on the run from jail in South Australia...Rolf Sawford!

The glitter ball was lowered from above this time, again creating much excitement from the 'blue rinsers' infront of us and then the din created with clapping and the stamping of feet for an encore was as loud as the band had been! This Ipswich crowd has in the past been very reserved but last night were really into it, especially the 2nd set.

Damian did his usual showboating during his intro to 'Run Like Hell' stopping to get the crowd going. One wag shouted out 'Oh you tease' to much laughter and another guy in a strong country Suffolk accent shouted 'Hurry up, I've gotta get up for work in the mornin'! The place was a riot, the band were still smiling at that one once the lights were up again.

It was a blinder, literally. My mate who saw them 7 years ago could not believe the transformation and is booking tickets for the August Ipswich gig today. My other half, her first gig this tour agreed they just get better every time and my other mate at his 2nd gig still cannot believe what he is seeing and hearing. Oh..almost forgot to say, I congratulated Gareth on the way out and blagged the list. I said it was for Mike and he gave his 'Yes of course Mike' smile. (Mike I'll post it if you PM your address)

Norwich next up for me.
