Roseland Ballroom 10.11.08 Review 3 years, 7 months ago #1

Finally after what seemed like an eternity of waiting, It was time to go to the show in NY.
Its quite a surprise they didnt wreck the place...the place looked like it was going to fall down at any second  ;D

Before the band started playing a guy came out on stage and talked about the band, and The Wall album itself, I thought the band was going to interrupt him like on Is There Anybody Out There, but that didn't happen

Showtime: 8:00pm

I snuck up into the pit in front of the barricades as the house lights went off to take pictures for Bobby Harrison the new guitarist, and as "we came in", and the accordion began to play, the crowd went wild. The words "The Wall" were etched into the screen behind them. The opening notes of In The Flesh struck the crowd like a bang of thunder, and went out with a bang, spotlights on Arran (new drummer). The Thin Ice was awesome, always one of my favorite solos on the album. Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 1 was great, with new animations reminiscent of the film, of course this is a song that the crowd knew making it really cool.  The Happiest Days of Our Lives with updated video as well, looking really good. Another Brick Pt. 2, as always rocking the house, giving Jason a long deserved keyboard solo, which he nailed.
Mother was cool, new animation again, and with the crowd responding to every one of Ian's "questions" with the biggest response on "should I trust the government?". Goodbye Blue Sky, not one of my favorite songs on the album, but live, is utterly amazing. The new animation is incredibly accurate to the movie, and Its a multi-sensory experience that you will all enjoy so much when you see the band. Empty Spaces, my favorite song on the album was awesome, the flowers on screen as the Wall is built behind it. What Shall We Do Now? with the crowd singing along. Young Lust seemed like it was slowed down a little, or maybe it was because What Shall We Do Now is rather fast...The girls were dancing pretty cool on this one, getting a little sexy  . Then, Ola came out and did the groupie act, with Ian in the chair. Ian did a great job on One of My Turns, and Don't Leave Me Now. I was hoping to see him freak out, but I guess you cant throw lamps on a small stage crowded with musicians.  ;D Another Brick Pt. 3 was awesome, so was the Last Few Bricks. Then as the song winded down, with one brick left out of The Wall, it zoomed in on the last brick hole, and we saw Pink. Goodbye Cruel World (surprisingly) was quite the crowd sing-along  , and with that set one was through.

Set Two.

We sat this set, up on the balcony (VIP only  . Hey You was great with the crowd singing along again. Is There Anybody Out There? had an awesome animation, with Pink scrounging at The Wall. Damien, and Carl (sax player playing bass) sat at the edge of the catwalk thing playing together on this one. Nobody Home found Ian sitting in the chair with the lamp. This song is always my favorite, because Ian puts so much feeling in it. Vera was very moving with the crowd taking part in the vocals again, and Bring The Boys Back Home. Comfortably Numb seemed to be the big number for the night. Damien's solo set the place on fire. Again, no mirror ball, i'm guessing their wont be. The Show Must Go On, Ian disappeared off the stage with Carl taking over on Bass again. Then, once again with a bang, In The Flesh? with no censorship , With a backdrop mirroring the original Wall shows in 80-81. Run Like Hell, went great with the crowd lasers and all. Waiting for The Worms had a cool backdrop, and Ian singing into the megaphone. Stop was cool, Ian taking off his coat, and dropping the megaphone. Then, I inched my way to the other side of the balcony to see The Trial in all its glory. The animation on this one was quite breathtaking, with Kangaroos and all. Ola sang for the wife, and Jacquie sang the mother. Ian sang everything else, except for the judge, who I think Damien sang.  ??? Then, The Wall exploded. That was probably the coolest part of the evening. Then, Carl came out playing clarinet, Damien on mandolin, Jason on accordion, Bobby on guitar, and the girls singing for Outside the Wall.

The encore set wasn't the highlight of the evening for me, just because I was still mesmerized by The Wall sets, but everybody else went nuts. Ola, and Amy doubled on Great Gig in The Sky which was for me the greatest part of set three for me.

The encore set was:

Time
Great Gig
Wish You Were Here
One of These Days
band intros
Brain Damage
Eclipse

For those of you who don't know, Carl plays about everything. ***Bongos, Tambourine, Cowbell, Guitar, Bass, and Clarinet*** Thats quite a list, and Jason didn't even try to tackle it during the band introductions.  ;D

Afterparty was fun, as always. Great to see the guys and as nice as can be.
we didnt get home til' 4 am. It was definitely worth it, and it will be worth the 7 hour drive to Toronto in December.
I'll post a few Pics a little later...

Hey Stratguy.

Thanks for the fabulous review! Glad you enjoyed the show!
You've wetted my appetite now, Can't wait to see Ian performing as Pink. Be nice to see him in his leather coat on the stage, rather than when he tried it on in our kitchen  ;D

I think that review might just have cost me some plane tickets.

It is worth whatever you paid for them    100% worth it.

Especially if you can get in while Bobby is still on tour. He said he thinks until Nov. 9th, so if you can get in while he's still on, I recommend it. Hes killer.

Here are some soundcheck pics.
