TOPIC: Ian Cattell

Ian Cattell 3 years ago #1

Just been speaking with an APF newbie who went to Brighton.

They loved the show but were of the view that Steve and Damien make for more authentic vocals.

I thought Ian was really good as "the facist" and I think looks like he would like to be an actor (maybe he is!) - in those tracks he came into his own, although I thought he was a little restrained/too safe during the "audience" sequence (sorry brain fade - can never remember the name of that track) - I'd have like more venom and putting the spotlight on some single people - the spot was rather wide.  It's a very powerful sequence.  I know why they would have shyed away from that to avoid complaints, but it makes its point better when done per the original.

What do people think?  Steve & Damien over Ian?

Much as I love the contrast of voices and enjoy listening the both Damien and Steve, for me Ian was the missing link for the band and has made the sound complete.

I often thought the only area they were sometimes weak in, were the vocals, but I don't ever have that feeling any more. I am not a great lover of the theatrics side and can find it a bit cheesey, but I think he plays the part of 'Pink' very well.

This years show is as complete as I have seen a band for sometime. The downside of extensive touring is the band can get exhausted - but the upside is that as live performers they are very tight musically and more so than many so called professional bands. The Aussies version of the Wall is an exceptional rock opera and Ian is an integral part of that (IMO).

I agree Tim, Ian's vocals rounded out the whole male vocal department completely. Between the four of them they now have a very acurate vocal sound. Very pleasing to the ear. The band has more more flexiblity now with Ian in there.

Do Jason or Paul do any vocals whatsoever??

I always thought that Paul should do the line in "One of These Days I'm going to cut you into little pieces"...that would be authentic!

I absolutely agree  with your newbie  Headache, Steve, Damien and Colin sound much more authentic.
I don't consider Ian to be a very good singer and still can't understand why the band would hire him when they do such a better job. Perhaps they thought a change was needed after years of constant touring with a limited song base.
However the Wall is a musical and needs a straight singer/actor to carry it off and Ian does a pretty good job if a little off key in places.

Originally Ian was taken on to cover the North American tours that were too long for Colin's liking in 2005. Keeping him as vocalist with Colin and Steve Mac on tour should tell you something. I prefer the Ian/Damian combination singing over the options.

I think they're all great vocalists, but only Ian really does justice to the later work. Rog's voice was very different in the early days, and Colin does the vocals on those albums brilliantly, but he couldn't sing The Wall.
