My wife and I saw The Australian Pink Floyd Show at Uptown Theater in Kansas City last night.

Pros...
-killer sound (possibly even the best sound mix I have ever heard there)
-tasteful lighting (easy on the eyes, not too over-the top, appropriate for each song) [Pink Floyd Experience was the most annoying lighting of any show I have EVER seen]
-great vocals (both gilmour and roger waters parts)
-great backing vocals (blown away by the great gig in the sky backing vox)
-great setlist. normally i would hate getting a greatest hits setlist, but since this was my first time seeing them it was great because it let me be very critical of their handling of Syd, Waters, and later Gilmour material.
-very trippy and humorous visuals and very professionally made. (they did not use cheesy canned footage that looked like it was purchased from some generic bank of footage like PFX)
-music, sounded phenomenal and very close to the albums with just a bit of shredding here and there
-visual screen. Very badass and even though this is the smaller one it still took up the entire stage at Uptown. (they also have the arched screen purchased from Pink Floyd for larger venues)

Cons...
-ticket price (Tributes should not cost as much as seeing the real thing.)
-no lasers or inflatables. But that is actually a good thing. Uptown Theater is a beautiful venue and seriously, there is no room for either here. I love the balcony and always buy tix there. I don't think you could use lasers in a venue this small. (plus i thought PFX's pig was cheesy as hell and took up too much room)
-female vox on Pigs. They did not suck, but they seem like they were used to avoid doing the harder Waters vox. (but then they played sheep Ian did ALL waters vox and they sounded great)
-same setlists every night and no room for improvisation (The Machine)

Really, my only complaint if you read this closely is ticket-prices. But they do have all those mouths to feed and all that gear to bring with them.

I've seen close to a few hundred concerts including Roger Waters (twice), Radiohead, Tool(5 times), Dream Theater(4 times), and Porcupine Tree.  Very tight, visual, and pretentious concerts are my forte!

As a Floyd fanatic I was really critical of the entire show from beginning to end.  This show was a test for me and they passed with flying-pig colors.  Next time I will kick back and enjoy the show for exactly what it is...

A Pulse-sized show squeezed into a small or mid-sized theater!

Yes, I will definitely see them again!

To those who say the Aussies are better than seeing Roger Waters are on crack.  I saw Roger Waters in 2007 and he absolutely rocked a venue of 18 thousand people.  Trust me, you are insane if you thank that the Aussies are better than that.  I did not see people going insane for 30 minutes after the show, in the streets, dancing on cars like Mr. Waters last show!

Now I need to see The Machine.  I have a feeling they will be the Holy Grail of Floyd cover-bands for me based on their cds/DVDs.  I just like how they jam and leave more breathing room in the music and tackle more obscure songs, change up their setlists, and even play solo Syd Barret material.

frog you said that ticket prices for a tribute should not be as much as seeing the real thing.  i completely agree, however yes the aussies do have alot of crew "mouths to feed". but that is not the only thing. this is not your typical bar cover or tribute band. they are a world wide touring band with a lot of overhead. they dont just cruise around in a mini van or box truck with gear. they also perform in large venues.  in my opinion the tickets are under priced. you can get a four pack in most venues the aussies are playing at for about 110. after taxes and fees. i was amazed at how inexpensive the show was considering that i have seen some bands that are not tributes at the same theatre who cost so much more to see and it was obvious the overhead was not that high nor did i leave feeling the same as i do with the wow factor the aussies have. dont get me wrong i left pleased from those bands and had a great time but no one gives me the wow factor the aussies do.

as per the machine i have never seen them. im sure they are very good in their own right. but for me i really do not think anyobe could top the aussies, unless pink floyd themselves got back together which is impossible at this juncture.  my grandparents raised me and my papah (grandfather) brought me up to be a huge fan of classic rock.  my all time fav song is learning to fly. the aussies nail it like no other could or can and i just know that. they add their own little twist to it. it just encompasses me with a euphoric feeling everytime i hear it.

Our tickets were 52.00(with charges) for the balcony.  I paid $50-$55 total for my last Roger Waters ticket.

Anyways, they are great and I'll see them again.  But, it's harder than hell to convince anyone to pay that much for a cover-band though.  That is what we pay to see Tool and nobody touches Tool for a visual show.  They are Gen-X's Pink Floyd.

A most enjoyable read frog! I too want to see The Machine, but sadly live on the Canadian west coast, so this is not likely going to happen.

I'll second that.  I've seen Waters 3 times and he never ceases to amaze me (2000 was friggin AWESOME because he did so much of his solo material, and I love Amused To Death).  The main thing that Waters has over the Aussies is crowd control.  Not to mention he was a part of the real deal.  I think people mean that the Aussies do a better rendition of the original Pink Floyd tracks.  Waters does change it up a little live and it doesn't always sound like the album (although the Aussies have borrowed his versions of STCFTHOS and WTM).  Usually the Aussies try to make it look and sound as much like PF as possible, whereas Waters just sort of does his own thing.
Ashes and diamonds, foe and friend...we were all equal in the end.

I too was at the KC show.  I'm actually (now) living in Wichita, and took the 3 hour drive up north to see the band again.

I also loved the show.  The venue was small, the parking was quite close (just a hop skip and a jump across the street).  I had great seats (6th row back in the center) and the band put on a great show!  I did miss not having the inflatables, and they didn't play "Money", set those thoughts aside, and they are great as always.  The ticket price was a bit steep at this venue (I paid $85.00 plus tax and charges), however it was such an intimate theater, that not many people could fit in there, so EVERY seat was a good seat, and worth a more premium price.

My biggest gripe was the lack of Air Conditioning (at least down on the floor) we were all sweatting like Pigs (pun intended).  I can't speak for the balcony, but I'm guessing you guys were more comfortable there, Frog.

I really enjoyed Skippy doing his between albums thing!  That was a great concept!  As always, it was a top-notch performance that I'm anxious to see what they do next year!
