The show last night was great! Their performance was very tight - especially the guitar solos, they were spot on. My favs were a full version of dogs (!!!!) - One of These Days - Set the Controls - and Astronomy Domine (Obviously I'm partial to the older material).
Although these were my favorite songs performed, the ones with the most impact were Welcome to the Machine, Fletcher Memorial Home???(I think...like I said, I'm not tooo into the 80's floyd, but this one almost brought a tear to my eye) and Bring the Boys back home....the production quality for those were through the roof.
I never imagined Welcome to the Machine would sound so good live, but all the panning of instruments and sound effects and the overall sublime tone of the song was just a mind blower. My favorite moment of the night was the lap steel solo during one of these days...It sounded better than I could have ever imagined (I think that song stuck out to me because I play bass and dobro, and that song has the best bassline of the night coupled with a nice, long lap steel solo)
The warner theatre is an amazing venue to see any show...the sound is astonishing and the atmosphere is like your at the opera. All the ornate rococco style decorations would have came alive had I ingested any ethnogenic substances.
There were No "Kewl Lazerz" or inflatables. All the animations were some sort of CGI 3-d 1990's looking stuff, with no original PF animations or film clips being used. The CGI stuff was about 3 steps up from that old dire straights video - you know - "money fo' nuthin" and it was all based around kangaroos and other stereotypical Australian themes. Every time that aussie stuff would be smathered across the screen I would say to my friends "Where are these guys from again?". And then there was "Skippy the Hippie Kangaroo" - the unemployed, overgrown albino rabbit that ONLY listens to pink floyd albums in his parents basement. I liked those sequences.
To all the folks that complain about no lasers, mirrorball, floaty things, whatever - the music is good enough to stand on its own and it needs no "fluffy gimmicks" to support it. Their lighting was very complimentary to the music. When PF first started using lasers in their show it was a TECHNOLOGICAL FIRST...its not like that any more...any hack PF tribute band can get a hold of lasers, but does their music compare to TAPFS?...I think not (hint hint....several species - the tribute band out of baltimore cant hold a candle, musically speaking, to tapfs - but they have some cheesy lasers - hoooray). If you want a laser show, you should have seen TOOL's 10KD tour a few years back...their light/laser show would blow just about anything away.
My only gripe about the band is that they sound a bit overproduced at times. The drum style does not fit the songs a lot of times (has he ever even listened to mason play the drums?) The other cover bands (cough cough...several species) give me a weird "cheesy" feeling while I'm watching them....their performance is about 85% cheese if you ask me.....but TAPSF only had about 5% cheese factor....yes it was still a little cheesy at times (especially the wall stuff, I'm just so sick of hearing that material, but for 90% of the people at the concert, the wall and dsotm are the only floyd albums they know - that and whatever else PF songs government controlled radio play for them) but whaddayagonnado?
All in all I had a great time and so did all my friends! I'll see em again if they ever start playing echoes, fat old sun, or embryo and lay off the wall for a while.
I snapped a few pics while I was there (hope this works):
