TOPIC: Halifax

Halifax 2 years, 6 months ago #1

Great show... as always.  I thought that the crowd was a little more subdued than usual.  The band (as mentioned before) is putting their "stamp" on some of the songs... making it their own- to a point.  I liked it, especially experiencing it live.

The band seemed to be going through the motions at points... almost like "thank Christ this is the last night, let's get this over with an go home!"  Which is understandable.  Then on a couple of songs, they really seemed to get into it and have fun.  The connection between Damian and Bobby during some points in "Sheep" was astounding to witness.

All in all it was a good show.

I do have some complaints, however.
This show did absolutely no justice to when they played Halifax in 2006 and 2008 (only other two times I've seen them).  The first set was perfect, and I couldn't have asked for more.  However, when they started getting down to songs like One Of These Days, and The Wall suite, they started becoming noticeably sloppy.  Particularly on Vera, Comfortably Numb (he sang the same verse twice lol), and Run Like Hell.  I was also very disappointed that they skipped over Bring The Boys Back Home completely.  I know they weren't planning to skip it, because the drummer started playing it, and was signaled to stop almost right away.  The whole no-laser thing was kind of a let down also.

The first two times I saw the Aussies in Halifax, I gave them 10/10.  This time they barely made an 8/10.

But y'know, it was still amazing.

Hey all...I was three rows from the front last night, so I think I have a sense of what went down during Vera/Bring the Boys Back Home/Comfortably Numb segment - the feed from the keyboards seem to go down completely at some point right at the beginning of Vera.  It didn't hurt the song fatally (though the organ/synth chords were missed) but the big orchestral textures for Bring the Boys Back Home would have been impossible w/o keys.  That's why the lights went down for so long...they were regrouping and troubleshooting.  I think it was as much that unexpected glitch as it was fatigue that gave the lyric confusion in Comfortably Numb.  All in all, I think they regrouped marvellously!

Here's a question for folks, and feel free to write back...did anyone see The Wall show last year?  They did this terrific overture with a medly of different themes...I guess it wasn't an overture since it didn't come at the beginning of the show...  I think it was close to the end of the first act, or at the beginning of the second half...  at any rate, I would kill to have a recording of that piece of music.  Anyone know where a copy could be found?  If so, feel free to write me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. What caused the aborted start of Bring the Boys Back Home and the hasty switch into Comfy was the million to one chance of a simultaneous hard drive failure and the failure of the switch to the back up drive. Under the circumstances it was a very slick recovery.

I have to agree with Tigersuit. My wife and I had been to see them in '06 and '08, as well. I was blown away by the first show....and quite honestly, was even more impressed by the Wall. I did see the same "deficiencies" last night and of course, the hard drive crash explains the big hiccup before Comfy....that's fine.....but I found a lot of "distortion" in the songs as well....it seemed once the boys got rockin', it was hard to pick out the vocals over the guitars or, my biggest beef, being a drummer (which I usually pay the most attention to at live shows) I could hardly hear the drums at times. They just didn't sound as "clean" as before. One of the funnier moments for me came after the show....see, my wife and I split up in July...so I took my new girl this year...bragged the show up for weeks, got her all pumped up for the show....then afterwards, mentioned some of my dissappointments to her....well, you know what the first reaction was, don't ya?..."It's because you weren't with your wife?"...haha....I reassured her it wasn't that at all and after showing her some of the comments here, I said "See?..I'm not the only one!".............But....I must say.....with these few minor flaws, as it were....I was still mighty impressed and I will not hesitate to check the boys out again....(and the girls......You have one amazing set of vocal cords, Amy!)....and I would not hesitate to recommend this show to anyone!...'nuff said!
