Ok, let me start this off by saying that I'm no musician, and no expert, and am nothing more than a lover of Pink Floyd music. But I've listened to this music for almost 40 years now, and that counts for something! So here is my review on the show last night with, "All in All, it's just".
Well, me and the missus (Maureen) made the trek up Vancouver Island to see "All in All. it's Just" in Courtenay BC. And it was well worth the trek too.
It rained so hard on the way up that for about 25 minutes the wipers were on double time and were going at about the speed of the bass line does in "One of these Days!!" LOL The venue was very intimate, and the crowd was excited/supportive and really into it. It's the first birthday for this band, and they have done a great job on finding the heart of what is Floyd. The venue was small and a good deal of their gear wasn't used as it wouldn't fit. This band is a theater band and has all the projection equipment and the mood altering lights ...the works. But this show was about sharing a birthday with friends and family and playing some Floyd...indeed they played about 26 pieces I think, and had run out of time by 11pm. Stuff from all the Floyd era's was played with heart and passion........ and fun. It was great fun, and Maureen and I had a ball and were treated very generously. The dance floor filled a few times, and a mix of all ages were groovin' to Floyd. See......... I always knew you could dance to Floyd!! LOL The club was a dance club on any other night, and had a great dance area in front of a low stage. It felt like the band was right in your living room. People sat on the floor at the foot of the stage and were right next to the band. It was the most intimate Pink Floyd experience that I have ever had. A far cry from the PULSE tour in '94 when I sat in the second from the back row at the other end of a large indoor stadium filled with around 62,00 people. DG himself looked like he was 1mm high!!
Dan and the band played well, and clearly enjoyed the show as much as we all did. This is an 8 piece ensemble, and has three great backing female vocalists who all are very talented. One plays sax for the sax parts (Rhonda), one also plays percussion and guitar here and there (Mishka) The other gal (Kelly) starts out GGITS with a jaw dropping ....hair up on the back of the neck rendition of the first section of GGITS. The next two sections are very well sung and Rhonda adds a slight smoooooth jazzy feel to the middle section. Brilliant! Mishka finishes GG with a stunning show of her vocal talents. WOW
Dan, who does lead guitar and vocals is fantastic, and hits all the right notes and has that Floyd feel we all recognise when we here it. Drumming is spot on brilliant by Robb who even looks like Nick Mason! Dave plays bass and sings, and is outstanding. My personal fav he sang was, "On the turning away", thanks for that everyone! These lyrics are profoundly moving, and in a world filled with apathy and indifference...we all need to listen to them more often. Barry is the second guitarist and keyboard player/vocalist who stands sort of in the back, and is constantly filling in those spots that we all know in the Floyd sonic spectrum. Barry provides lovely acoustic guitar work and outstanding contributions to this group.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention the sound quality. It was excellent!
In this part of the world we don't get much live Floyd music unless someone travels through. The Aussies were here last in 2004, and PFX have also been through. So it's a great treat to have a local band take on the rather daunting task of doing Floyd shows. This is not an easy undertaking as we all know.
Dan and the band did an outstanding job of this intimate show last night. Maureen and I thank you all very much for a fantastic night out!
I'm not one for posting set lists but it was great....old and new, and a great rendition and suprise when they did the soundtrack from the movie "Obscured by clouds".
Happy birthday again! Keep up the great work. There is an insatiable apetite for Floyd music.....and you gave us all a great helping of it last night. I look forward to seeing you again soon.
