TOPIC: Leave it alone or put your own interpretation on it?

Leave it alone or put your own interpretation on it? 3 years, 2 months ago #1

This topic came out of a conversation with bigdog, when we were discussing a version of The Machine's WYWH, which has sax on it. I love it, he hates it. Judge for yourself in the videos section:

The Aussies have made a living out of sticking closely to the originals, although when I see them do Set the Controls, I wish they would get creative with more of their setlist. The Machine have a remit to extend and interpret classic Pink Floyd music sometimes successfully, other times less so.

So, leave it alone or mess with it? Orchestras don't take too many liberties with the classics, and they have survived for generations. On the other hand, the original artists that recorded the classics of today often changed and extended them in their own live performances, and I love those versions. Why shouldn't tributes do the same?

If you didn't write it, leave it alone. I think STCFTHOTS gets a different reading by the Aussie's dependent on who is taking the guitar solos. I like it when Jamie cuts it loose in a couple of sections and the next time I saw the band without him it seemed that Damian did the same, very cool.

If you didn't write it leave it alone. Well said that man.
Who's going to be the first person to suggest that Beethovens 5th symphony would benefit from having a washboard and tambourine solo in the middle of it?
OK so TAPFS Australian-ised Set The Controls and I'm delighted with the result but as a one off it works. Its really not necessary or advisable to start tinkering with the rest of the repertoire  IMHO.

I'll second that my like-minded friend!

Even if you did write it leave it alone.  I thought some of Roger's interpretations on the Radio Waves tour were horrid.  Also, I hate the truncated Shine On and some of his use of female vocals (Welcome to the Machine, Wish You Were Here) on his more recent tours

Well, its a tough question, I think there should always be a difference between a Live performance of a song and the Studio take and generally with most performing artists it is the case, even when playing classics that are very well known.

Take a tune like Dogs, Not sure how it was performed live on the Animals tour, but I pretty sure it wasn't with four guitarists and two Keyboard players!
So for tribute bands its a hard choice, we play a version that you would un-doubtedly recognise and all the parts are represented, some albeit fleetingly, and some implied, but the overall impression of the song is there, and its how we think it would have been done with one electric and one acoustic guitar, Its still 17.5 mins long and is the same arrangement as you find on the Album, However if I had a third guitarist in the Band, it would be nice on that accasion but not justified for the rest of the show.
So really, I don't think theres a yes/no answer to this, I guess it depends on the billing and if you like nice surprises and the odd nasty shock... I am sure we manage a few of those too.
