TOPIC: The Machine - Atlanta

The Machine - Atlanta 5 years, 4 months ago #1

Some of this I pasted from a short review I did on PF on line...

The Machine came to Atlanta last night (thanks Dan for the heads up!!)... After seeing the Aussies last November, TM had pretty big shoes to fill and boy, did they fill them.

For a four piece band, they pull off Floyd very well. Joe Pascarell (I believe he's the guitar player) does one of the best Roger Water voices I've heard yet. He clearly had a good time last night and was smiles all around. The keyboard player nailed all the classic sounds, the basest and the whole band for that matter was extremely tight but, as a four piece band they do have limitations... SOYCD was performed with no sax player so they chopped it up a bit to get around it. It worked but a sax player would have been icing on the cake. And, if they added a few female backup singers... oh man!

They don?t have the stage production of the Aussies but what they lack visually, they make up for in musicianship. The venue (Variety Playhouse) is an old movie theatre turned into a concert hall so it's not that big. Mr. Screen was just a set piece with no video being displayed and served as a back drop for lighting.

Where TM differs from TAPFS is, TAPFS plays everything pretty much note for note and, that?s a good thing. The Machine takes a few liberties and adds a few subtle differences to several songs and they do it in a way that does not take anything away from what we are used to hearing. I found what they did quite refreshing to what I?m use to hearing... A few new twists to old tunes, particularly a jam after Young Lust.

TM played a wide variety of Floyd from Atom Heart Mother to The Division Bell. It was a great show and I highly recommend seeing these guys if they come to town, you won't be disappointed!

Thanks for a great review Scott, sounds like you had a great evening. There is a place for all Floyd tributes in my book, from the grand to the modest. As long as it's Floyd played from the heart it will do for me.
Are we nearly there yet?

Great to read your review Scott, thanks. I agree Phil, that if it's played from the heart it's most enjoyable. It mustn't feel contrived, it has to feel honest for me to be enjoyable. I don't care about the odd problems, or dropped words or notes, just give me Floyd music played with passion.

The Machine I believe is the only trib that can boast a longer band life than our boys here...their fan base is absolutely rabid! You gotta appreciate that, although I dispute their claims to number one of course...   They really seem to be a great bunch and I'm going to try to get to a few shows this year..they've actually played here regularly, but, I've never seen them...time to write some more reviews!  ;D

I love my part time job!

Le Machine!  I think having the second guitarist does "flesh out" the sound very well.  On the other hand, how many times to Floyd tour as a four piece?  There is something to be said for that being authentic.  On Shine On and Money, we have our second guitarist play the "sax solo" -- it actually sounds really good.  Bob may get a chance to observe that for himself soon.

I do like Joe's acoustic patch that turns his electric into a very authentic sounding acoustic!

Dan old chap!.........I'm headding your way!

One thing I really like about the Floyd tribute community is that everyone is very supportive of everyone else. Everyone from the bands in early stages of development playing small local venues to the ones who have been doing it for years and years and are playing to large arean venues all over the world. Outstanding.
