TOPIC: The Pink Floyd conundrum?

The Pink Floyd conundrum? 5 years ago #1

Pink Floyd 1967-1983
Pink Floyd 1987 to present
David Gilmour
Roger Waters
Australian Pink Floyd

OK, the above list is from a discussion about Roger Waters current show and it's merits musically. Larry posed this as an answer to a repeatedly argued point about who is the best at the moment, stating they should be treated separately and not as one thing. A simplistic solution to the discussion, but I think a very good and valid one.

see "Roger Waters - Earl's Court (night one)" for the full discussion, if interested (click link below).

What I am intrigued to know is how people would rate them in order of preference, if they were separate entities and you were given the opportunity to see them now performing live, doing a similar show. This of course is quite hypothetical?

My choices would be:

1. Pink Floyd 1967-1983
2. Pink Floyd 1987 to present
3. David Gilmour
4. Australian Pink Floyd
5. Roger Waters

Mine would be

1. Pink Floyd 1967-1983
2. Roger Waters
3. Pink Floyd 1983 to present
4. David Gilmour
5. Australian Pink Floyd

That is no disrespect to the Aussies because I will get to see them as often as possible but we are talking about a wish list here and not real life.
Are we nearly there yet?

Tricky. If they were all playing DSOTM, and judged 100% on musical content my list would be:

1. Pink Floyd 1967-1983
2. Australian Pink Floyd
3. Pink Floyd 1987 to present
4. Roger Waters
5. David Gilmour

Changing the setlists and judged on the entire show:

1. Pink Floyd 1967-1983 (anything at all)
2. Roger Waters (ATD and other solo stuff - I really don't like his current Floyd interpretations)
= 3. Pink Floyd 1987 to present (Pulse)
= 3. Australian Pink Floyd (last tour)
5. David Gilmour (last tour - dull, dull, dull)

Try listening to DSOTM on Pulse and then the one on the Aussies Pops DVD. DG is awesome on Pulse, but I think the rest of it is a bit sterile. On balance I like the Aussies version better, it feels more fluid and the BVs are way better.

Well, as I started this I suppose I'd better join in.

I'd put them in this order of desperation for tickets if they came on sale:

1. Pink Floyd 1967-1983
2. Roger Waters
3. David Gilmour
4. Australian Pink Floyd
5. Pink Floyd 1987 to present

I think that's fair.

Edit: Although it's touch and go between the last two.  If push came to shove I would go to the present PF over the Aussies but I think I can be forgiven for prioritising that way.

5. Which One's Pink    ;D

Had to really struggle with this because I loved David's shows last year and the appearance of Rick Wright was the icing on the cake.  However, Roger's performance at Hyde Park last year and Earls Court on Friday stirred something inside and his performance was very moving.

And I would really love to see Which One's Pink.

You can't remove things from the list and add your own
