For me it was a moment I wont forget.  Part of discovering Pink Floyd was discovering music for the first time, on my own, without influence from others.
I was about 12-13 years old (1982-1983) and my Dad who was a mechanic at the time, had given me a cache of cassette tapes that someone left in a car that was being junked.  In this cache of tapes was a tape that had all the lettering warn off (a sign of being handled a lot).

We rewound the tape to the beginning and pressed play....and waited.  It was a summer day, my friend and I were sitting on my front porch with my little battery powered cassette/recorder and listened.  No sound!  So we turned it up...still nothing.  We almost ejected and put it in the garbage when we heard it.

Up until this moment, my influence to music was minimal.  My parents never played any music in the house. Of my two older brothers, only one listened to music but it was at his friends house.  And by music, I mean no Church music, elevator music, or Lawrence Welk and Liberace (my Grandma was living with us)  Here I was, born in 70 and not really, REALLY listening to any music!  I think I was robbed.  My friends at school...were listening to Boy George, Micheal Jackson, Def Leppard you get it...they had MTV!

thump thump, thump thump, thump thump....
I remember thinking, "what the hell is this"
then hearing some voices...Stop, Rewind, tun it WAY Up.

thump thump, thump thump, thump thump....I've been mad for fucking years... fucking years ... I have always been mad.
"ok, this is weird"
then we hear the mad laughter, then the audio is getting loader, and louder, and then a woman screaming.
Ok, now we are pretty much scared, as we have no idea what the HELL we are listening too.
Tape is Stopped, we dont know whether to throw the tape away or try more.
Luckily for us, we decided to keep it going to see where it would go.

We listened to the rest of that tape, on my porch, uninterupted.  We were both blown away as if hearing music for the first time.  We didnt even know what band that tape was from until a few days later, when we played it for my friends older cousin.

That was the moment for which I discovered Pink Floyd.

Tell us yours...

Tell us yours ? I have done before and at the risk of boring others I'll briefly tell you...
I was 14 years old and went out for the first time with some older friends(against my parents wishes)  To "MOTHERS" small cramped music venue just less than a mile from my home in Erdington. Saw The Pink Floyd as my first musical experience. Theve been with me  for most of my life.
Don't think I could have made that tale any shorter

I think I was about 13 or 14 when I discovered Pink Floyd through a school friend called Tim. This was about 1974, I think, as I do remember the day WYWH was released. Tim came from a very bohemian, liberal, hippy family where anything went. He lived in a very tall house and had all the attic rooms to himself, which he painted a deep purple colour. The whole house smelt of patchouli oil and wet afghan coat. I came from a standard 70s council house that smelt of overcooked cabbage and coal dust. So I spent all my time round at Tim's place, listening to their music The Who, Stones, Gong and, of course, the Floyd. The rest as they say is history...
The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think...

1973 at my cousins house - I was a big ELP fan but he thought I might like Floyd.

The parents were out and they had a brand new Ferguson Music Centre - really swish, smoked plastic top and STEREO speakers my lord!

We lay on the floor head to head, with a speaker either side of us and this is how I heard DSOTM for the first time. Blew me away and still does. My favourite album of all time and the one i would take to a desert island. Lucky enough to see PF live and now the Aussies fill the void. Cannot imagine a life without their music?

My feelings exactly Tim. I was at our friends house. We used to help out at weekends because his brother used to be a DJ who did weddings etc. I walked in just as the heartbeats started and my heartbeats stopped dead, I swear. I had never heard anything like it before & it changed my life. I know that sounds corny but thats how it was. Scary thing is that although they liked it a bit they never became great fans & for many many years as I was indulging my passion I never really met anyone who were into the Floyd so if I hadn't, by chance, heard it on that day I may never have know about the Floyd. I still shudder at the thought of that.
Are we nearly there yet?

Think it was 2005(sorry for being so late lol) and my dad showed me the Pulse version of Comfortably Numb. Was completely amazed and that kind of started me off listening to PF. Will admit i only heard Dark Side for the first time last year! lol
I love Aussie Floyd. Simple as that lol.
