TOPIC: David Gilmour DG20 Fender Pickups

David Gilmour DG20 Fender Pickups 4 years, 5 months ago #1

Anyone have these pickups in their Fender Strat?  I want to get some for my left handed Fender.  I have been reading a lot of reviews and they sound really good.  Lots of tones and noise reduction.  I know they won't fully give David's classic sound since they were used in his 57' strat, which he used through the 80's and 90's, but any info you could give on them would be helpful.

I dont like them they dont make any diffrence to me apart from make it easier to control feedback but heres a quopte i have which might help

I`ve owned DG-20 for three years now and are totally satasfied with these pickups! I find them very versitile, they give you a wide area of sounds just controlled by two pots.

If you watch PULSE you can see that David tweaks the EMG-controlls quite often. If you want the versatility of the EMG`s to shine trough you will need a good and clean effectsystem.
Earlier I owned a Hiwatt and must say that by tweaking the SPC and EXG-controlls you can adjust the EQ on your guitar and you hear big change in the guitarsound. Now I`m using a transistoramp and feel that the versatility of the DG20 doesnt shine trough as mush as in a Hiwatt. Check out the frequencyresponse below:

You see that the tonecontrollers offer up to 10-15 dB in gain. They`re like two GE-7 built in to the guitar thought they are much more finetuned so no matter how you turn them you wont get a bad guitarsound.
A rosewood neck + DG20 would give you a guitarsound very close to Tim Renwick, thought playing like Tim is a different debate.

I SIMPLY LOVE THEM!! But aware that by putting EMG`s into your strat you will loose some of that classical Stratsound that you get with original pickups. But that doesn`t matter when you already have a good stock strat.

Make some yourself. How hard can it be? It's only a bit of wire....... ;D

I have them in one of my Strats. They have a lot of tone control with the SPC and EXG controlls. One is a mid boost the other is a bass and treble control. Dave used them because of the number of effects he had at the time and needed a lot of gain out of his guitar. Stomp boxes are notorious for tone-suck.
Hanging on in quiet desperation.....

I don't know...to me the PULSE/Momentary Lapse/Division Bell sound is another evolution of the classic DG sound.

I'm a lefty who plays Strats too, but I have Custom Shop Texas Specials in one of mine, and the stock HWY 1 pickups in the other.  With the effects that I use to capture the DG overdrive sound, any pickup will get me close enough.  Like they say on the FDP, close if a relative term, though.  I'm not too picky.  If I can get enough long sustain and delay to get the Sorrow/Comfortably Numb tone, I'm okay.
