TOPIC: Pompeii was floyd at their peak.

Pompeii was floyd at their peak. 2 years, 4 months ago #1

I saw "Live in Pompeii" many years ago and loved it, but I was quite underwhelmed when I viewed the "director's cut" over the weekend.  All the cheesy atari cgi scenes of flying over mars landscapes and outer space crap really made the film seem disjointed and cheesy...I was getting furious with it and had to turn it off...luckily the original concert film is stashed in the special features section of the DVD and we watched that first before struggling through the directors cut. The new footage of pompeii and the cgi stuff really ruin the mystical mood the original presented so effectively, but the interviews and behind the scenes studio stuff is still interesting.

-------------------------

Despite the new dvd's butchering of the original, I was again reminded that this video captures PF at their creative peak - in which they are all working together, creating, singing, improvising (and getting along) - pushing the boundries LIKE CRAZY - and creating fine art.

To me...they have created a new way of doing things in this era...their improvisations are unlike anyone else in which they create an element of chaos and control in the same moment.  There are obviously a lot of psychedelic drugs involved...it makes me wonder how much they did to get to those places...and then recreate them.  I remember reading that they would much prefer a pint of beer over some blotter (not syd though!), but jesus christ - their knowledge of that realm is PIVOTAL in their music.  Anyone have insight as to their psychedelic drug consumption?

When watching this (and other PF bootleg videos of this era...like the one in San Fransisco in 1970) I keep getting this feeling that they REALLLLLLY know something we dont.  There is some connection they have with an intangible realm and they are tapping into it in every song...they are like masters of the dark arts or something like that.  They have a deep connection with the land, the ancestral realm, and have a knack for evoking what they know in a hair raising manner.

It seems that during this era 1970-1972 - They went FURTHER than they ever would in the future and are at the top of their game.  They truly figured something out.  Its like they learned a mastery over music and the psychedelic realm that no one can rival.  Its almost like a style of kung-fu that they invented and mastered.

My favorite scene from the film is when they show RW fiddling with that huge synth....and then he busts out the most INSANE sounding "on the run" while the camera  pans ever so slowly around the studio.  Its almost like he has complete control over time and space...and it gives you the feeling of soaring through another dimension....simply jaw dropping.  He sounds like a fucking synth shaman.

Like I said...they know something we dont!

Here is the 1970 bootleg DVD I was referring to - Seek it out on dimeadozen.org or thetradersden.org.....there is also an audio boot of the show with the full setlist!

here is a description I found:

Pink Floyd - 1970-04-29 - San Francisco, CA
(DVDfull pro-shot)

Live at KQED

DVD5 | 59mins | MPEG2 | PAL | 720x480 | 4:3 | 25fps | AAC 48kHz 224kbps | 3.9GB
Language: English | Publisher: Hawklord HWKDVD001
Included: more than 2 hours of bonuses (clips, interviews, etc…)

“Very few Pink Floyd's shows have been recorded, especially dating from the 'golden age' of the Floyd (early 70's), when they invented a new style of rock.
This is one of the more celebrated recordings of The Pink Floyd filmed in KQED studios in San Francisco on the afternoon of April 29, 1970. ”

“The cheerful freaks who floated over stange fumes during the concerts of Pink Floyd's tour " Ummagumma " in 1969/70 had the privilege to see and hear the Graal, the electrical version of "Atom heart mother", never recorded under this form, as it was, from July, 1970 and the concert of Hyde Park, mixed with an arrangement of cords and brass orchestra which killed in the egg all its rocky lightnings. Since then, the fevered quest did not stop of filmed clips, bootleg albums, then at the age of the net, fragments of concerts with a more or less good quality in Florida or in Japan, of a show in BBC or a concert in Saint Tropez. And miracle, the without-public concert done for QKED was recorded with high video and audio quality, and reappeared recently.

In a studio without public, on April 29th, 1970, Pink Floyd on stage play a show where in an hour, alternately acoustical or electrical. They are going to build a mosaic of their three albums an hour, " Ummagumma ", "More" and "Atom heart mother".
It opens with " the thing ", 19 minutes of "ATM", its topic, its guitar riff, its cosmic ravings and final. "Cymbaline" and "Grantchester meadows" follow, and electricity again with "Green is the colour" chained with a furious "Careful with that axe Eugene" to finish in a languid way with "Set the controls for the heart of the sun".
The sound is very good, perfectly restored (from the 3/4" original master) and pictures come from a rebroadcast of the show in August, 1981. The film starts and ends with pictures of in-flight fields taken in low flying, with hyper-saturated colours, a bit "forced " but as a result well-deserved psychedelic style.
For those for whom true Pink Floyd is that former "Dark side of the moon", this concert will be the object to be cherished, so much the concerts of this tour were artistic and emotional peaks of the band. Each of four members is on his place, but with all his place, necessary piece of an enchanting jigsaw puzzle.

01 - Atom Heart Mother
02 - Cymbaline
03 - Granchester Meadows
04 - Green Is The Colour
05 - Careful With That Axe, Eugene
06 - Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun
