Which album is a good place to start, for those of us unfamiliar with their work?
The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think...

Try 'In Absentia'. Really good album to start with. Some of the earlier is a bit lame except for the track 'Radioactive Toy'. A good hint is to type in Porcupine Tree on www.pandora.com as I heard a lot of thier stuff from different periods.

I only have Deadwing and In Absentia. Both are good, but I found Deadwing much easier to get into..
In Absentia has some great tracks, but also a couiple which I think are poor.
Both albums have 'heavy' sections, In Absentia more so. The heavy tracks on this album are more spiky sounding, more Rush (Counterparts era) like. Whereas the heavy sections on Deadwing are more Tool like.

Visit www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=290 to listen to some tracks ("Arriving Somewhere, but not here", "Even Less" etc)

I probably listen to Stupid Dream more than In Absentia or Deadwing, but I like them all a lot.
