Well after being messed around by Ryanair, 3 flight changes & 3 hour delay from East Midlands and being told whilst on holiday that the hotel we had booked had closed, we eventually got to Dublin to see Metallica at Marlay Park.

The was a mini festival with 4 support acts.

Glyder, a local Irish 70's-80's rock type band that were enjoyable.
Mastadon, seen these before and they didn't impress me then, and not impressed this time.
Alice In Chains, these were OK and enjoyable.
Avenged Sevenfold, I enjoyed these but many others did'nt?? The young guy they dragged out of the mosh pit to sing must have been on cloud nine, and he did a good job of it too.

Metallica came on stage at 9, they did the usual 2 hour set with a lot of the older songs, the usual tunes in there Sandman, Master of Puppets, One, Fighting Fire With Fire,Nthing Else Matters but a big surprise was Whiskey In The Jar I've never heard them play this live but being Dublin it is a favorite.
Metallica seemed a little off form, with a few mistakes but at least you know it is live, to me they were not as good as the earlier shows at Nottingham or Sheffield  due mainly to sound, it was a little poor at Dublin but then it was an outdoor gig and harder to control than indoor concerts.

I enjoyed this concert and the Dublin visit, what I did not enjoy was the messing around caused by Ryanair (yet another 1 hour delay on our return flight), the rip off prices within the venue(6 euros for a burger, 6 euros for a SMALL beer ETC) and a rip off cab fair this morning of 35 euros to the airport from central Dublin.

I know that its a bit late to mention it now Lea! But if you ever come across to Dublin with us Aussie followers  ;D we always get the airport bus in and out of the city centre. Its cheap and reliable.

Sorry to hear about your disappointment at Irelands fair city and maybe all the hassle put a gloomy slant on the trip?

As bigdog says, the airpot bus is the best value, but €35 from the City to the airport is pretty much what it costs? I guess it may seem high to some, but it depends on what you are used to?, to me that's cheap! I live 7.5 miles from Bournemouth airport and a taxi there (one way) is £25.00 normal hours, early or late at night adds another 5.00-8.00! I flew to Poland this year for under 40 quid return!

The venue prices are right too unfortunately - Dublin has never been a cheap city by International standards and it seems worse now because of the poor exchange rate. A pint of Guinness in a 'cheap' old style Dublin pub is €5 and a trendy bar adds 20%+ to that. It's just the cost of living over there, I don't think you were being ripped off, thats just the way it is, Dublin is very different price wise to most of the UK, especially right now.

I'm guessing you live in the North of England - try living in the South, everything is expensive here

Don't get me wrong here, I enjoyed Dublin and would revisit but did make some mistakes along the way.

We booked our hotel some time ago, Days Inn at Rathmines, which shut down last Monday, Days Inn did rebook us into the Talbot St hotel, 77euros a night. Whilst in Dublin we did see rooms for 15e a night

Ryanair did provide a service, and we did get to Dublin and back for £75 each return, but after being messed around and then the delays this put a downer on things, we were expecting to arrive in Dublin at around 9pm, instead we got there at 00.30am, so did not have the time to enjoy a pint or two.

The taxi was a rushed decision, we though that getting the bus early(6.15) on a Sunday morning would be difficult, so opted for a taxi, which took about 10-15 minutes to get to the airport, next time it will be a bus.

Prices of food/drink cannot be avoided, I know that any capital city will be expensive and accept that, but cannot expect the fact that every concert venue or cinema you got to will fleece you senseless if you want food or drinks.

Ah, that makes sense - 6.15 on a Sunday morning is outside hours for a Taxi.

If you go again, give us a shout and I can point you in the direction of some classic Dublin pubs
