I thought I would give this band a plug on here, as I don't think they have been mentioned before. A Welsh Prog Rock group that Steve Hackett is apparently a big fan of. They have an upcoming date at The Peel in Kingston, on Sat 19th December (I'm going Hippie if you fancy a prog night?). They are also recording at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in November.
A fantastic 6 piece band with a great female vocalist, who I'm sure may even be Hippie in disguise! It's a Christmas gig and it would be great if some forum members could make it along?
Magenta at The Peel
Influences are apparent in their music, from Pink Floyd to Muse - they are clearly a modern prog band. This is how an fan describes their last album Metamorphosis on Amazon:
"For fans of classical progressive music, symphonic rock, and contemporary alternative rock music this album is a must. An absolute masterpiece. For those not familiar with Magenta, the band's influences are quite apparent, maybe a little too much so on previous albums, but not so on this one; they have evolved into their own sound. Metamorphosis will remind you of Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Mike Oldfield, Muse, and even Porcupine Tree. This album combines the best of those influences and their own sound into an epic, sprawling, musical journey. The title track, Metamorphosis, is an example of how to write a 23 minute epic without one unnecessary embellishment, each melodic turn leaving the listener wanting more of the previous one. There is an edge to their music now very much like Porcupine Tree in terms of attitude, none so more apparent than on the title track. The album includes another epic, The Ballad of Samuel Layne, of almost equal quality. As a whole Metamorphosis flows wonderfully from one track to the next.
The recording quality is outstanding, the musicianship is brilliant, and Magenta are blessed with one of the best female vocalists in the business."
(I think he likes them!).
Check out their website -
www.magenta-web.co.uk/index2.html for more info and the below video gives you are good idea of what they are capable of and where they come from. It's a 47MB .mpg download, so may take a minute or two if you have slow broadband, but it's certainly worth checking out - see if you can spot Hippie? (plays in Windows Media Player)
Magenta Live - Demons
I really like them and seem to be enjoying smaller lesser known bands at the moment.
NOTE: There is a band on Spotify named Magenta, with an album called 'Art and Accidents'. This is
NOT them, even though the biog description says so! This is a Norwegian band with the same name, Spotify got it wrong!
