Scary films are a subject.....but what about the books you've read that appear on the silver screen????

Stephen King is a perfect example.....I've read many King books and some of them have hit me hard in the scary punch zone because my imagination takes his words to a new level - but when the film comes out, it revokes some that....I have to watch someone elses imagination that is being shown to me on sceen and because it's visual it kills off what's in my mind.

What do we think? Can books be scarier (or better?) than films???

The most chilling "media" I've ever come across, is a book by James Herbert, called The Dark. An absolutely 100% big time proper scary covers over your head oh shit I really wish I'd left the light on mummy give me a cuddle kind of book.

But.

If it came out on DVD, I would NOT buy it. It would be ruined, however good the film was.

Comment???

I much prefer the books to the films every time. You get caught up in the book in a way that you never could with a film.

Keats you spoke of Stepehn King, I also have read a lot of his stuff and they kick ass compared to the films. One example of the top of my head is S.K.'s 'IT'. The book was fabulous, couldn't put it down but the film was a pile of poo imho.

It's not just the scary ones either, J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter books are all much much better than the films, again jmho, to me the big screen can never visualise anything as well as you can in your own head.
Yesterday is history, tomorrow is mystery, today is a gift thats why it is called present...

s56.photobucket.com/albums/g163/mommapin...PFS%20Dudley%202007/

I'm an avid reader of Stephen King, I'm sure I've read almost all of his books. I agree about the pathetic attempts to make his books into films although there are two that I did enjoy, Carrie and Christine. There rest of the films I can leave, especially IT. The book was an amazing read, it was so creepy that I had to scratch away the eyes on the front cover. I was excited about the release of the film but felt totally let down when I finally got to watch it. From then on I've not bothered with a Stephen King film as I know they're going to be crap. Don't know if you've read the Dark Tower series? I've really enjoyed losing myself in those books, I've just started reading the last one now although I do think it's odd that he's included himself in it, I'll have to wait to see what that's all about.

Ah, I tell a lie, I've just thought of another of Stephen Kings books that was made into a film, The Green Mile, amazing read and amazing film, no doubt helped with the acting ability of a couple of the characters. Oh, damnit and Shawshank Redemption...
Hello and thanks for having me.

I have yet to see a movie that was more enjoyable/fulfilling than the book the movie was based on. The only exception has been movies that have had novels written from the screenplay (like Star Wars)... but in those cases the movie came first, so it had already captured my imagination.

Today, I try to stay away from movies that have been made from novels that I've read. The only one that hasn't deeply disappointed or angered me was the Ben Afflick version of Tom Clancy's 'Sum of All Fears'
