i commented elsewhere here about how great it used to seem buying Vinyl LP's.

Some people still maintain LP's are better than CD's, this has to be an urban myth though, I know some pretty hardcore friends who used to swear by Vinyl, they now collect CD's ... but their reluctant  LP collections are impressive, must say, one of those guy almost has a shrine built around his LP's !

Was up in my loft recently, that's where my old 300+ collection of vinyl LP's are stored, must admit, looking at the bulk of them bought back fond memory's.

I guess buying LP's was a completely different experience to the way we buy Music now, the Pink Floyd LP's in particular seemed good value for money, all fold out covers (12" in those days) I had the black shrink wrapped original WYWH Pink Floyd LP the day it was released in NAFFI BFPO Germany including its post cards.

Amazing really, some of those albums I bought as a bare teenager in 1975 are now considered classics.

Heh DSOTM, WYWH and in particular, Deep Purples "Made in Japan" were fond favourites for me then, and just over 30 years later they still are ... Maybe I'll bring down my LP collection from the loft for another look, if I can find suitable audio equipment on Ebay.

I only have around 30-40 pieces of vinyl (mainly Floyd & Zeppelin), I foolishly sold off the rest back in the early 90's.
Personally, I prefer CD's as they are far more convenient and as I only have a 'budget' Turntable they so sound much better on my system.
You don't have to get up every 23 minutes to play the other side.

I no longer buy vinyl, my turntable is there just to occasionaly play what I still have.  I know a couple of people who have amazing systems (turntables costing over ?1,500) and purchase heavyweight 'audiophile' pressings. A very good, correctly set up turntable can sound better than CD, but there are so many factors like the quality of the pressing, turntable setup and the album itself. Some albums just sound better on CD, others on vinyl.

The presentation of the sound is different, it is more organic, as it has not been sampled, there is the potential fo vinyl to sound better than cd as there is essentially an infinite sample rate with no cut off at the frequency extremes.

It boils down to personal taste as to which is best, as the presentations can be so different, the important thing is that you should end up listening to the music, not the hifi.

I love the drama of vinyl, it is a pleasurable experience looking at the gatefold sleeve, slitting the black plastic shrinkwrap on WYWH with a blade to keep it in place  .

You certainly get a far bigger bang for your buck with CD, but a turntable is a very nice thing indeed, and a correctly set up one is magical.

I still have a collection of vinyl LP's and singles, but my deck is knackered(direct drive Pioneer with bust centre bearing), so the deck and the vinyl is up in the loft somewhere . When I was a teenager I used to go out every weekend and by either an LP or several singles (paper round and pocket money came in useful ) I have a full collection of Iron Maiden picture disk singles, Kiss picture disks, Floyd vinyl and loads of other obscure picture disks. Don't know there value now and they will still be perfect as I never played the picture disks :

I know that some very expensive high end audio turntables can be fantastic, coupled with valve pre-amps and amps they sound so wonderfully warm and 'real' unlike the very clinical sound of CD's.

Got a bunch of vinyl, never listen to it, still have a turntable too. Can't bring myself to part with any of them.
