Well at the risk of being shot down and called a 'Camera Nazi' can I perhaps offer a slightly differing opinion?
I've been going to concerts/festivals since the age of 14 and I'm getting a little ripe now (not as ripe as
bigdog
, but less than a decade behind him!), so it's been awhile! Now way before the days of digital cameras or mobile phones, people have always been trying to sneak some type of recording media into concert halls. In those early days, you were NEVER allowed to take anything in; certainly this was the case in the halls I used to frequent. It seems to be a phenomena that has crept in slowly over the last 20 years or so and with the advent of camera phones, it is now almost impossible to police. Because of that, I think many venues have given up trying to police it and now people expect it as a right? Digital cameras have made it much worse and now that everything has a bright LCD screen on it, it's like a sea of giant bloody glow-worms out there!
Now here's the controversial bit - am I the only one it annoys? Because I find it intensely annoying. I know I have also been party to it, as I have occasionally sneaked the odd picture here and there myself, but when I do it's very quick, very discreet and I always have the screen (and flash) switched off so all you see is a quick hand
half raised and lowered. I do it because it's tolerated, but I don't agree with it and I would happily accept the privilege being taken away.
It is nice to see pictures, but goodness there are so many other ways to get them. Buy a tour programme, DVD, magazine or just surf the official sites on the net – there's so many out there? I carry the memories in my head and if you sit and concentrate on the show, instead of talking, taking pictures/videos, MAKING PHONE CALLS!!!, getting p***** at the bar so you have to get up every 15 minutes, then you will find those memories are far more vivid. I swear some people must leave halls without a clue of what the band have just played!
So there we go…now I would never try to stop someone doing it myself, as a returned ‘smack in the gob’ would certainly spoil the rest of the show for me, more than an LCD screen would! But I'm sure I am not alone in saying please have a bit of consideration for the person next to you, who really loves this band and wishes to enjoy it, without any distractions. Maybe venues could hand out a few more free media passes, so when you bought a ticket you could request one. 20 or so names go in a hat and when you get your ticket, if you are lucky enough, you could snap away merrily right at the front. Ticketmaster could have a tick box on the booking form maybe? - just a thought...
Phew…sorry folks, maybe I'm a little tense or something and want to take
larry’s GOS crown….
