Put together by these guys:

http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_guitarsolo.html

Criteria: - Guitar solos are the best display of talent by these musicians. Each guitar solo was ranked mainly for
the overall quality of its composition. Originality, complexity, influence, and lasting appeal are also considered.

Here's the top 20:

  1. Comfortably Numb - David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
  2. Stairway To Heaven - Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)
  3. All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
  4. Freebird - Allen Collins (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
  5. Maggot Brain - Edie Hazel (Funkadelic)
  6. Texas Flood - Stevie Ray Vaughan
  7. Eruption - Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen)
  8. Highway Star - Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple)
  9. Cause We've Ended As Lovers - Jeff Beck
10. Hotel California - Don Felder/Joe Walsh (Eagles)
11. Mr Crowley - Randy Rhoads (Ozzy)
12. Little Wing - Jimi Hendrix
13. Time - David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
14. Layla - Eric Clapton/Duane Allman (Derek & The Dominos)
15. Sweet Child O' Mine - Slash (Guns N Roses)
16. Cliffs Of Dover - Eric Johnson
17. Nottingham Lace - Buckethead
18. For The Love Of God - Steve Vai
19. Voodoo Child (slight return) - Jimi Hendrix
20. November Rain - Slash (Guns N Roses)

Also have a look further down the site for 100-200 and the top 100 Live solos. Obviously there can never really be a definitive list but these seem quite well reasoned and balanced. A certain David Gilmour makes quite a few appearances too as you'd expect.

never heard of #5... interesting that Buckethead made the list too.  I mean if Les Claypool will play with him, he must be alright.

I have to ponder this one....

Buckethead... actually it's quite good, if you give it a chance.

I never understand why people do these things as top 100's.  I mean does anyone really care if the thing at number 56 is considered" better" than the one at number 59?  I suppose some really anal people sit down and argue about this all night.

I'm also firmly of the opinion that we have now had so many of these top 100 songs/solos/albums since the 80's, that people now feel compelled to vote for Comfortably Numb/Stairway etc because they've been told from previous polls that it's the "best".  See what I mean?  Their minds are conditioned - brainwashed almost into believing what is the "best".

Personally, I prefer Stairway to Heaven (shock, horror), but I needn't worry because I've seen it at number one at various other top 100 things over the years.  So if it was number one back then, why is it not number one now?  The whole thing is just stupid and tells us nothing new.  It's getting a bit tedious now.

The more people see Comfortably Numb/Stairway etc up in the top three, then the more likely they are to vote for them next time, even if they don't actually LIKE them.
Be very very careful what you put into that head, because you will never ever get it out. Thomas Cardinal Wolsey (1471-1530)
