TOPIC: Nick and his cars

Nick and his cars 4 years, 11 months ago #1

A great shot taken by 'Pedro917' from the AtlasF1 forum.
Last weekend was the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Sussex.
Nick always attends and his childhood dream came true - actually driving a priceless
pre-war Auto Union D-type as raced by the greats of the 'Silver Arrows' era such as Nuvolari.

A bit of history on it: V16 supercharged engine, 500 bhp and capable of 180mph in a car built in 1938.
Auto Union were ordered by Hitler to show the world how great the Germans were with their technology
and beat the world's best on the race track. A huge propaganda exercise. German cars dominated for the
5 years leading up to WW2. This car was way ahead of it's time. All cars before had the engine in the front,
this one set the standard as used today, engine just behind the driver with the gearbox on the back axle
- just as F1 cars are now. The engines alone reputedly cost ?7500 to produce - in 1938!

This car was found rotting away in a barn in Poland in the 1960s and was lovingly restored by
a collector in England. Now owned by Audi ( formally Auto Union ) and Nick was asked if he would like
to take it on a run before 100,000 fans at Goodwood. Lucky guy!

In the late 50s I vividly remember playing on my cousins Scaletrix and one of the cars was an Auto Union. I vividly remember it because I accidentally stood on it and broke it and to my shame I put it back in the box without telling him.
Fantastic picture and history lesson Andy.
Are we nearly there yet?

I had one of those too Phil!
I bet those old Scalextric Auto Unions go for a bomb at auction now!
Have you seen the new ones? Digital and the cars can change lanes.

It looks like Sir Jack Brabham driving there.

Just thought you may like to view these few shots that I took of Mick Mason at the same Goodwood venue at the weekend
