Today was our daughter's first day back to school.  Kids from all over the state attend her school.  Some are residents.  It is a deaf school.  Our daughter is deaf with other disabilities.  She is in a life skills class.  She came home from school today saying her friend Devon had been killed by a train.  We thought surely she was mistaken.  She was not.  He had just turned 19 the day before he was killed.  He was coming home and had taken a shortcut.  He did  not hear the train because he is deaf.  He was a sweet kid with learning difficulties like our daughter.  He was a very friendly, outgoing kid who was always wearing a smile and the first kid in the class to want to shake your hand.  He was a terrific young man.  Our daughter looks like she wants to cry but hasn't.  She keeps saying she is going to miss Devon and that angels took him to heaven.  I think I am still in shock.  Just a few months ago he told me and Amanda to have a nice summer and he would see us in the fall.  I just can't believe this has happened.

Nasty things do happen.
One of the reasons I'm on this forum is so that I can get away from the real world. I'm sorry that your daughter has lost her friend.

Life is sometimes cruel, always unpredictable. I'm fairly certain that there isn't a grand plan, just random coincidences that we either make the most of or not.

She keeps saying over and over that Devon won't be coming back to school.  Her way of dealing with it I guess.  Last night she sat and watched videos with Devon in them.  They spent a lot of time together.  He sat at her lunch table and they both went on the class camping trip in April.  He was always the kid that would help her with what she couldn't do.  He was a friendly kid with a big smile and a big heart.  He's going to be missed.  I was just looking and almost every picture she has from anything school related has Devon in them.  Her face looks like she wants to cry any minute but it just hasn't happened yet.  It seems every class loses someone and it is usually the kid that's extremely likeable.
