I've  had a huge disaster with my PC,  I'm not sure exactly what has happened but I have lost 3 out of the 4 hard drives that were in the machine.

Firstly the PC started slowing down dramatically, then the first drive failed, a 250gb drive that I had connected to a scsi card, luckily this drive had next to nothing on it, then the second drive followed in quick succession.  The latter drive was VERY important to me as it contained ALL my photo's from 2000 onwards, all my Aussie Floyd photo's , holiday photo's and some very special photo's of family and friends, some of which are no longer with us. Also family holiday videos and all my MP3's. > >

So I set about removing the drives and seeing what could be done to recover the lost files. Then I realised that my drive 'C' was the same make and model as the drive with the photo's on it, so in my wisdom and with a huge gamble decided to remove the PCB on the back of the hard drive 'C' and swap it for the PCB on the faulty drive.  BIG MISTAKE as this caused BOTH drives to become unusable, so now I'm left with a completely knackered PC, that will no longer work. The 250gb drive is fried, it has a burnt out chip on the PCB that looks like it has been getting very hot for some time.

So the message here is to back up your files, Ive been stupid and now regretting not back up my files.

Ive passed the drives onto my friend who builds and repairs PC for a living, he tells me that there my be a chance of recovering some of my files, but it is a long shot and he don't know what caused the drives to fail in the first place

Ive decided to build a new, up to date PC and will be backing up on a regular basis.

Bummer. We were a lot better off in the old days. You had to burn your house down to lose all your photos then.  ;D

LOL yeah.  Reminds me of when my brother was a fireman.  As he was leaving a burning house he saw a picture of the children on the tv.  He grabbed it on the way out, thinking the family would be grateful he had saved at least one photo.  The guy said, "Well if you had time to grab this why didn't you get my game system?"  I lost a bunch of photos a long time ago on my first computer.  Nothing special though.  We always back everything up now.

Drives are buggered >, no chance of anything being recovered. Oh well time to start a new and write the other lot off, just stripped my old PC down so that when the other kit arrives I can bang it back together and get up and running again.

Nightmare situation - it always takes a disaster to prompt a data backup. Good luck with the new build, it's horrible when you lose your data, but I guess it will never happen again?

Depending on how much you value the lost files, there are people that could get them back for you, but at a price. Have a look at these:
