There's quite a famous photograph, from the 1930's in New York I think, that shows some construction workers sitting in a row on a steel beam eating lunch. They're erecting the structural steel frame for a skyscraper and they're very high up from ground level and there's not not a safety harness in sight!!

I've tried searching on the internet but with no success - I'm obviously not typing in suitable phrases for the search. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? Thanks.

Yes ,Ive seen this a few times mainly in US style bars, its unbelievalble that this is not a stunt or trick photography this is how they used to work, hard as nails, imagine the health and safety at work brigade steam would be coming out of their heads. the risk assessment for that would be astronomical.
Cracking phot ,whats it for ? if you dont mind me asking.

There is another picture similar to that one Lorna. The difference being that the one I'm thinking of looks more dangerous and features fewer people.
Probably taken by the same photographer though.
A friend of mine has a large print copy hanging on the wall of her new kitchen extension. It was recently purchased from a shop called Down Town,if you have a branch nearby Mike ? I may well see her tomorrow morning and will ask her what its title is.

Hi Canberra,

No probs - you ask away. I'm on 'Grandad duty' this weekend and I've got a new book of aerial photographs of London that I brought down to Dorset to show my granddaughters. They were intrigued at the photos of the tall buildings and they thought it was dangerous for the people who worked so high to build them. I explained that things were very safe these days, unlike in the last century when terrible risks were taken, and I said that the buildings were much higher in countries like America and I told them about this photo that I had seen in the past. Naturally, they said "Gramps, will you show us the photograph?" As I've said, I couldn't find it, but step forward Lorna super star and it's job done. (The girls were absolutely incredulous when they saw it by the way.)
