Following on from recent posts concerning Windows Vista, the below extract is from an article that was published 4th April 2008. Interestingly Vista will be replaced much sooner than expected and XP will be retained for a lot longer than originally planned. Testament enough I feel that Vista has failed to live up to expectations. Also, Microsoft has announced it will release a cut down OS called MinWin, which should please a lot of people with older equipment and laptops (Andy K, should be just what you need?). MinWin will only comprise of 100 files and be 25MB, compared to Vista's 5,000 and 4GB size. Many people are complaining that Windows is becoming too bloated with unnecessary extras.

Microsoft Corp. has dropped two strong hints in the past two days that the next version of its Windows operating system will arrive in 2009, shaving up to a year off previous expectations. It could also be a signal that Microsoft intends to cut its losses with Windows Vista, which has been poorly received or shunned by customers, especially large companies.

Microsoft has long said it wants to release Windows 7 about three years after Vista, which was released to manufacturing in November 2006 but not officially launched until January 2007. Given Microsoft's recent track record - Vista arrived more than five years after XP -- most outsiders had pegged sometime in 2010 as a safe bet for Windows 7's arrival. But News.com reported today that Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates answered a question at a business meeting in Miami about Windows Vista by saying "Sometime in the next year or so we will have a new version." And during its announcement yesterday that it would extend the availability of Windows XP Home for low-cost laptops, Microsoft said it would retire the operating system only after June 30, 2010, or one year after the release of Windows 7, whichever comes later.

That implies that Microsoft is targeting the middle of next year for some sort of release milestone for Windows 7.

Will those of us who have been conned into buying the substandard vista get a free upgrade.
                No hope.
I shan't bother to tell you all about the trouble Ive had with the latest vista system update today. (when it eventually loaded and allowed me to restart)

Years ago when I first got into computers, I never could afford, no did I need, the latest and greatest stuff out at the moment. So as I look back at my purchases I realize that they were always about two steps or more out of date. This applies to most all the electric/technology that I own....I'm usually a few steps back from the latest and greatest. I just did this because I didn't have the money for the latest and greatest really. So I proclaim no wisdom in what I now see was a very good thing that I did. And that's never buy the latest and greatest of anything until it's at least a couple of years old! Oh.....anyone want to buy a B&W TV....I finally got a colour (color) one!

I'm with you Bob. I tend to be a couple of years behind technology wise but, as has been proved on more than a few occasions, you tend to get stuff cheaper than when it first appeared and usually in the case of computers bugs tend to be ironed out (except for Vista  ;D)
Example; your typical Flat screen LCD HD blah blah blah tele was around a £1000 or more a year or so ago and a lot of people rushed out to buy one for the latest 'must have' gadget. 12 months or more later on you get the same for 2/3rds of the price.
Just my take on things
