Did anyone here watch this film in the cinema when it was released and what were your thoughts on a movie that is rather difficult to follow and understand?.I use to watch this movie when i was young but didn't have a clue what it was about really until i watched it again today.  I would have loved to seen it on the big screen, The end scene is my fave moment in film history.

I saw it when it first came out (see my avatar quote - stolen by Ian  ...), I was blown away by it then, as it was so way ahead of it's time. Very thought provoking and many people over the years have their own take on what it was all about. Still a point for discussion and ACC never revealed what the true meaning was ..... this was his quote about the film, made in 1968

"You're free to speculate as you wish about the philosophical and allegorical meaning of the film—and such speculation is one indication that it has succeeded in gripping the audience at a deep level—but I don't want to spell out a verbal road map for 2001 that every viewer will feel obligated to pursue or else fear he's missed the point"

For me it is one of the greatest films ever made and your post is testament to how it has stood the test of time and is still able to provoke comment. Great to bring this up Nick147 and I too will be digging it out again to watch over the weekend now!

PS. I have my own theory about the films meaning, which grows each time I watch it......

Yes, i believe that the film includes so many meanings that you do need to watch it quite a few times,  The dawn of man where the apes learn how to use tools for killing, and the need to kill to stay on top. Near the end of the film when Dave disconnects HAL, Dave has to kill so that he can stay on top. Also the music is PERFECT for the film,  Have you seen 2010 Great Gig?

Yes I have, enjoyed it and it answered a lot of questions posed by the first film - good to watch it, then go back to 2001. However, I thought 2010 was not in the same class as 2001. Enjoyable but not as thought provoking or ground breaking. And you are so right about the soundtrack of 2001. I am a big classical music fan anyway, but Strauss could not have been bettered?
