I saw it when it first came out (see my avatar quote - stolen by Ian

...), I was blown away by it then, as it was so way ahead of it's time. Very thought provoking and many people over the years have their own take on what it was all about. Still a point for discussion and ACC never revealed what the true meaning was ..... this was his quote about the film, made in 1968
"You're free to speculate as you wish about the philosophical and allegorical meaning of the film—and such speculation is one indication that it has succeeded in gripping the audience at a deep level—but I don't want to spell out a verbal road map for 2001 that every viewer will feel obligated to pursue or else fear he's missed the point"
For me it is one of the greatest films ever made and your post is testament to how it has stood the test of time and is still able to provoke comment. Great to bring this up
Nick147 and I too will be digging it out again to watch over the weekend now!

PS. I have my own theory about the films meaning, which grows each time I watch it......
