They are checking the Doppler effect.

Fearlessly the idiots faced the siren.... checking.

Riddled with ambiguity. Are the emergency services vehicles driving quickly, or the people staring at them? Stay behind after class.

Why do people stare at emergency services vehicles when the emergency service vehicles are driving quickly with their sirens on, and the person observing them may or may not also be driving quickly with their siren on?

Because they are trying to remember and quote the classic Eric Morcambe line, but it usually escapes them and they just end up staring in deep thought.
