Just about to pick up my first new car and the dealer is still trying to push a £299.00 paint sealer and upholstery finish on the vehicle (is new car paint really that crappy!). If you listen to the way he talks, you would think the paint was going to be in a terrible state within a few months if I don't buy this treatment.

My view has always been it's no more than a good quality treatment like Autoglym/Diamondbrite or the like which you can buy in Halfords, but you obviously have to apply this yourself. Am I wrong and should I fork out another 300 quid?

I've never even polished my cars, just get them washed every now and then, and they still look great after 3 years. The only car I've ever had paint trouble with was a Nissan. Save your money, Tim.

Don't do it Tim. They're just trying it on. As far as I can recall, when I worked in the German car industry there were EU stipulations on specification & quality control of all motor vehicles sold - EU wide. Of course things like safety and emissions are top of the pile, but it also went as far as quality of finish and type of paint, lacquer, sealant to be used etc. I remember because we did the artwork, documentation for some of this literature and being English, I got involved in helping with some of the translation for the agency I was working at. Therefore the new car you buy should already be well protected.

£299.00 !!!!

No way Tim. It is not needed and way overpriced. In fact next time he mentions it tell him you are having second thoughts about buying the car and I bet he offers the product for free.
Are we nearly there yet?

I'm not sure I would want it even if it was free. I bet the car manufacturer would have something to say about a product that bonded to their paint if it came to a bodywork warranty claim.

Don't do it Tim!!

This is in the same vein as being pressurised into buying 'extended warranties' on goods from the likes Currys, Argos etc. etc.

I always feign shock, horror to the sales person as to why I didn't consider for myself the obvious choice of paying more for my purchase. This invariably results in a huge smile on their face as they move in for the kill. At this point I inform them that, perhaps, as their product needs an extended warranty to give it even a reasonable life expectancy, I should reconsider buying their product and select from a rival outlet. It's amazing how they then back off and can't get you to the till quick enough! And, incidental, I can't ever remember buying anything that would have benefited from having these useless guarantees.
