In the persuit of giving the people of Afghanistan the opportunity to take part in a 'free and fair' presidential election, the Government of my country have allowed our service personnel to be slaughtered and horrifically maimed.

I don't pretend to know the accuracy of the statistics, but if there is any truth in the reports that in some regions of Helmand Province as few as 200 in 55,000 people actually voted, I just can't help but think what a terrible tragedy and waste of human life it has all been.

Mike please don't loose sight of the fact that the murderous taleban are being shot in industrial numbers. So in that respect alone its worth it.
Nobody in there right mind wants to see our brave boys die or our allies either for that matter but as long as Muslim extremists are being pinned down in Afghanistan then they are not exporting as much cowardly terrorism around the world.

In principle, we're doing a worthy thing. In practice there are very few examples in history of one country using its military might to sort out another's domestic problems. I know the issues in Afghanistan affect the world, but we aren't going to sort it out for them. The loss of life is unacceptable.

It annoys me that nobody looks back in history regarding Afghanistan. If they are not slaughtering each other, the tribes unite to rid the country of Infidels. When that's done they go back to slaughtering themselves. Ask the Russians who spent 10 years there and got absolutely nowhere.
