TOPIC: China

China 2 years, 4 months ago #1

China executes mentally ill people, has a long history of human rights abuse in violation of internationally recognized norms and is the fastest growing polluter of our planet. Yet we are seemingly happy to spend an increasing proportion of our money on Chinese goods, gradually shifting the world balance of economic power to a country that continues to appall us with its actions.

"Each man has his price, Bob, and yours was pretty low."

I find this really disgusting, Nick. China execute this poor guy and refuse to acknowledge any kind of mental illness, he was only told two days ago that he was going to be executed, by a relative, he had medical records for mental illness as long as your arm and no amount of persuasion from relatives or government ministers did any good. > The drugs he was allegedly carrying were probably planted by someone who knew of his condition.

We should all boycott Chinese goods, however, that would be very difficult to do as just about everything you buy is ,unfortunately, now made in China.

I reserve judgement on this case and am not sufficiently well versed about the truth of it. Especially when listening to the radio only a few minutes ago to an explanation of just how much disinformation has been circulated by the "save this poor man" campaigners.

.... but it is their country, administering it's laws in it's way..................

in fact I'm not going much further with this, as I happen to like the Chinese having grown fond of them from many visits and I'm going again next year. A wonderful country with the most dedicated, generous, studious and hard working people I have ever met. Our record on human rights is also nothing to be proud of, we just hide it well. I don't always agree with how the Chinese Government acts, but I won't dismiss a whole nation because I don't like it's Government. I also agree with bigdog about reserving judgement, do we really know the facts about this? I don't like or trust our Government either, they are weak, dishonest and incompetent, but there are some very fine people that live in this land we call home.

China has VERY strong policies and laws regarding crime, particularly their drug laws - transgress and you pay the price. We may not like it, but at least the Chinese Government has the balls to do what it says it will.

I completely agree with you about the Chinese people, my comments were directed at the government. Their documented human rights transgressions are undoubted, their people do not have the freedoms that we take for granted. Whatever the details of today's execution, most of the world regards the death penalty as abhorrent. There are only 3 democracies that still practice it.
