Has anyone seen this new play of Stoppard's, currently running at the Royal Court Theatre in London?
Earlier today I was chatting to an old friend who saw the play last week. He tells me that although the main subject matter is the varying political fortunes of Czechoslovakia since 1968, the main character, Jan, is a Czech musician who left Cambridge in 1968 to return home and get involved in Dubcek's "Prague Spring" struggle against Soviet control... and numerous scenes which flash back to Cambridge contain strong references to none other than Syd Barrett. Apparently the play opens with a scene in which a blonde hippie girl is listening to a frizzy-haired guitarist singing "Golden Hair". Furthermore, later scenes show the same girl protecting the guitarist from inquisitive reporters after he's become disillusioned with the music business, dropped out and returned to live quietly in Cambridge...
