Andy's and bigdog's comments on Page/Plant's WALKING TO CLARKSDALE made me wonder what other albums by favourite artists have people here found most useful as a coaster or a frisbee?
Two that are high on my list:
The Style Council - CAFE BLEU
I liked The Jam. I wasn't a huge fan, but I thought they turnd out a very respectable body of work, so when Paul Weller moved on and formed a new band I followed along for a while. Their first two or three singles were OK, so when the first album appeared I duly plonked down a fiver for it. I should've just burned the fiver... what a soggy, directionless pile of stuff that sounded like outtakes CAFE BLEU turned out to be. And that was the end for me and Weller.
Robert Palmer - MAYBE IT'S LIVE
... and maybe it's dead. I really liked Palmer's early albums, up to but not including RIPTIDE and "Addicted To Love", so I automatically bought this when it came out. I should've known better, since Island Records' strategy was pretty transparent: after several years and six albums which had accumulated cult status but no hits, RP had released a cover of "Some Guys Have All The Luck" and surprised everyone by making the top 10 but without any album to cash in on that success... so enter MAYBE IT'S LIVE, which surrounded the hit with some badly recorded, cursorily performed live material from a couple of years previously, an old single b-side or two and a couple of weak instrumental demos. What a rag-bag of old tosh... and it probably sold far more copies than his previous, mostly excellent studio ventures.
Anyone else?
