I really like their first 3 albums, especially RTL and MOP.  >
plus the different sounding speed/punk of Kill Em All.

I liked some of the tracks on And Justice.... but think the mix/production is really shoddy, the bass guitar is non existent and the drums just have a really dry and muted 'tap' 'tap' sound.

I'll be honest and say I did not like their 5th album, Smell the Glove. I wanted the 10 minute epics of the previous 3 albums.
I still went to see them at the NEC where local band (and Metallica influence) Diamondhead made an appearance for a couple of songs. Good gig.

I have heard odd tracks of albums since then but nothing really caught my attention.

Which of the post smell the glove albums would you recommend?

I enjoyed some tracks off the 'Black' album (Enter Sandman,Nothing Else Matters, Sad But True,) but I thought 'Load' was better. I find Metallica, especially the earlier stuff too thrashy. Talking of Metallica have you seen the documentary 'Some Kind Of Monster'? Heavy metal band go through therapy??? Weird....... ???

I've been listening to Metallica for a while although not too much post Black album, St Anger was a better return to form for me.Live they were always superb too especially at Milton Keynes some years ago with Megadeth supporting.

Some Kind Of Monster was brilliant - just the way everything was turning into Tap especially with the increasing role of that psychologist fella. Lars came across as a bit of an annoying little shit for me and it was interesting to see how everything came together with the addition of Rob Trujillo who just blew them away and made them forget about being egos and businessmen and get back to some raw musicianship.

I watched SKOM for any footage of kirk hammett using his guitar gear and playing guitar for any insight! haha I was and still am a big fan of his. But the addition of Rob i thought was shoddy, yes they feel complete and that, but Lars said "we are the band we've always wanted to be when Jason left" How is that? By playing nu-metal? Where are the kirk solos? Pitiful (Dont know if I spelled/spelt that right haha) for a Metallica record. When is the next And Justice... coming out?
Ive been a Metallica fan for sometime now and i got to say And Justice is THE Tallica CD. That album changed my heavy metal listening for good. Possibly the best Tallica record closely followed by MOP, the tracks (well for a guitarist are awe inspiring) Definately listen to the solos in Blackened (for pure and utter virtuosic speed) Eye of the beholder (For the technicality) as well as classics like One just blow me away. Kirk at his best, James as usual on a great form bar the 17 year old voice haha!
The bass is only existent on a huge subwoofer or something i agree!
Oh yeah the drums are classic metal drum fills from goodold Lars loads of double bass for all you metal heads. What isnt there to like on this album?!
Guitar playing, Gilmour loving, psychological, philosophical individual

AS far as I'm concerned St. Anger sounded the death of the Metallica musical career.Third rate lazy rubbish.
I pre-ordered it and was very badly let down when I listened to it.
The band still has a mighty stage presence if you see them live though....
