TOPIC: Prog Rock Recomendations

Prog Rock Recomendations 3 years, 12 months ago #1

Hi everyone, I recently decided that my favorite kind of music is Prog, it is just far more interesting than anything else and you always seem to get your moneys worth.

Now I was hoping that you guys and gals who have been around for a while could help me out and point me in the way of any Prog bands that I may not have heard or listened to.

Prog bands that I like other than Pink Floyd/Syd Barrett are The Beatles, Blackfield, Deep Purple, The Doors, Family, Hawkwind, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, The Mars Volta, Muse, No-Man, Opeth (Only the light album they did), Porcupine Tree, Radiohead, Riverside, Rush, Sigur Ros, Van Der Graaf Generator and The Who.

I Dislike Electric Light Orchestra, ELP, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Kraftwerk, Queen, Secret Machines, Yes and Frank Zappa.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You don't like Jethro Tull ? Listen to Aqualung then say that ?
You don't like Kraftwerk? Listen to Radioactivity and Man Machine then say that ?
You don't like Frank Zappa ? Listen to Hot Rats then say that ?
              ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
You could try and listen to The Nice. They were in at the start of what became prog rock.
An acquired taste I do agree but its a style that encourage others to broaden their musical minds.
Try  NICE 1969 and Elegy 1971.
Rondo 69 is a track to listen for. Considering the time in which it was recorded its very clever.
I just remembered my favourite track on Elegy is America. Its good to be reminded about music I haven't thought about for a long long time

Thanks bigdog, I will have a listen to The Nice and see what I think.

I must admit, I have heard a lot about Aqualung by Jefro Tull, I will have to have a listen before completely disregarding them. My dad thinks that I would like some of Zappa's early stuff too.

I doubt I could ever get into Kraftwerk though, I just don't like electro

I may persuade you to change your mind.
Listen to this one, Ive lost count of how many times Ive given it a mention on this forum and on the old blue site.
An Electric Storm by White Noise.
The story goes that the title track of this album was influenced largely by the early psychedelic work of Pink Floyd.
